Until the Council of Trento (about 1550)

The church of Brione s/M started

  • Registers of baptisms in 1678
  • Registers of death in 1733
  • Registers of marriages in 1777

Before above mentioned dates the church in Brione s/M was not independent. Liturgical acts and their registration took place in the motherchurch 'San Vittore' in Locarno. These churchregisters start in 1580.

A big oaktree. In documents of the middle ages the name is also written as Cerone.

Why do we call ourselves as such?

On page 433 of this publication:
Cerro is dialect for oaktree, cerrone means:
a big oaktree.

Both spellings are correct, but are the consequence of a time difference.

Before about 1850 the family name has always been written with an e at the end. After that date the spelling of Italian family names changed from singular to plural. Also in Switzerland the spelling of Sciarone (singular) changed into Sciaroni (plural). In general this means that people who emigrated before 1850 have there family name registered according to the old spelling and those who left after 1850 according to the new spelling.

It’s nót Italy. In the south of Italy the name Sciarrone (with double r) occurs. This name was also used by Verdi in his opera Tosca, but has nothing to do with our family name.

Before 1800 the name occured in Switzerland only in the county of Ticino, in the places Biasca and Brione s/M. The relation between the family name in these two places still has to be investigated.

Because that is the legal name of the place. It is the abbreviation of ‘sopra Minusio’, in English ‘north of Minusio’. There is also a place called Brione without addition, but that is another place.

Not until 1945, when a court of arms was designed on the order of Noè Sciaroni (born in 1903), which is being used by several family members. (page 33 of Brione s/M, by Leo Marcollo).
